How to Make a Tarot Card Pouch

How to Make a Tarot Card Pouch thumbnail
Double the dimensions of your pouch if you plan to store two decks of cards in one bag.

Tarot card readers often store their tarot decks in a decorative box or inside a small drawstring pouch. This not only keeps the cards together in one place, but it makes them easy to transport without losing or damaging any of the cards. If you possess a tarot card deck and would like to make a custom pouch to store the cards in, you do not need a lot of sewing experience. Drawstring bags are relatively simple to sew and do not require any special patterns---if you can sew a straight line, you can make your own tarot card bag.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two rectangles of fabric on top of each other with the good sides facing inwards. Iron the fabric flat to remove any wrinkles before you begin to cut and measure the fabric.

    • 2

Place your deck in the bottom left corner of the rectangle of fabric to give you an idea of how large to make the pouch. Align the deck so that it is 3 inches from the side of the fabric and 1 inch from the bottom edge of the fabric.

    • 3

Draw the outline of your deck on the fabric with a pen. Add an additional 3 inches to the right of the deck and 1 inch on the top. Cut out the rectangles using a pair of sewing scissors.

    • 4

Pin the two rectangles together, with the right sides facing inwards. Sew the long sides together, stopping one inch from the top of both sides. Also, sew along the bottom of the pouch, leaving the top open.

    • 5

Turn the two pieces right side outwards and press the pouch flat with your iron. Fold the top of the bag over 1½-inches and then tuck the edge of the fold underneath so you have a clean edge.

    • 6

Pin the fold in place and stitch the fold from the outside to create a channel for your drawstring. Because you stopped 1 inch from the top when stitching the sides, this fold will create an open channel.

    • 7

Insert a safety pin onto the end of your ribbon and use the pin to help you push the ribbon through the channel to finish the pouch.
