How to Get a DNA Test for a Native American

DNA testing can help Native Americans identify their DNA markers.

Native Americans can obtain DNA testing that helps them understand their ancestry more in depth. These tests can measure DNA markers in the paternal line (father's father's father) and maternal line, giving clues to genetic factors and and ancestry. Since these tests only give the paternal or maternal line, they only give Native Americans a small snapshot of their DNA since they leave out women on their father's side and men on their mother's side. However, these tests can be obtained very easily and are fairly accurate. These tests can also determine eligibility for certain Native American rights.

Instructions

1. Order a test that has been verified for authenticity. The Indian Country Today periodical endorses Genelex testing, while National Geographic also makes its own verified testing kits.

2. Receive the test and perform the necessary steps to gather your DNA. This will likely be a cheek swab that will be taken simply and painlessly.

3. Send the testing kit back to the testing center.

4. Wait for results. Some genetic testing kits give Native Americans further information on their DNA testing that allows participants to enter their names in databases and virtually "meet" other people with similar genetic markers.
