How to Increase the Black Levels on a Projector

The correct brightness setting saves the need for an equipment upgrade.

Projectors right out of the box often need additional calibration to achieve an improved black level. Black level refers to the light output from the projector without a signal output. No matter what technology is powering the projector (be it CRT, LCD or DLP), it is not currently possible to achieve "true black" due to the small amount of light needed for transmission to the screen. However, with some adjustments, it is possible to greatly improve a projector's black level for a better overall viewing experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the projector and allow it to fully warm up.

    • 2

Remove all direct and ambient light from the room by closing window shades and turning off lamps.

    • 3

Choose a signal source that can provide a high contrast image, such as a movie clip on DVD. Find a freeze frame that is high contrast and includes clear black and white portions on the screen.

    • 4

Consult the projector Owner's Manual to find the projector's brightness settings and turn the brightness to maximum. (The image will look very washed-out.)

    • 5

Adjust the brightness setting downward, paying attention to the black portions of the image. Continue adjusting the brightness until the black portions are the darkest possible.

    • 6

Check the other areas in the image, such as any gray shading and fine details. If the brightness is too low, then gray shading and other fine details will look muddy.

    • 7

Adjust the brightness again (if necessary) to achieve the best balance between the darkest black possible and preserving the finer details in the image.

    • 8

      Save the brightness setting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Old black and white movies are not an ideal source for calibration due to low resolution.

  • A white ceiling above the projection screen tends to reflect light. Choose matte, dark surfaces for walls and ceilings.
