How to Repair My Totem Firefox Plug-In

The Firefox Totem plug-in works on Linux operating systems. The Totem plug-in embeds a video player in your Web browser that plays videos in Windows Media, QuickTime, DivX and other formats on Web pages, because official plug-ins aren't available. Totem can only play the videos if you have the appropriate codecs installed on your Linux system. If your Totem plug-in isn't working properly, you may have another video player plug-in installed that's interfering with it, or its files may be corrupted.

Instructions

  1. Disable Other Plug-Ins

    • 1

Click the "Tools" menu in Mozilla Firefox and select "Add-ons."

    • 2

Click the "Plugins" tab at the left side of the plug-ins page.

    • 3

Disable any video-playing plug-ins that compete with Totem, such as "VLC" or "Mplayer," by clicking their names and clicking "Disable." Totem's plug-ins are identified as "DivX Web Player," "Quicktime Plug-in," "VLC Multimedia Plug-in (Compatible; Totem)" and "Windows Media Player Plug-in (Compatible; Totem)." Plug-ins such as Flash and Java are not incompatible with Totem, so don't disable them.

    Reinstall Totem Plug-In

    • 4

Close Mozilla Firefox if it's open.

    • 5

Open a terminal window. Click the Ubuntu icon at the top left corner of the screen, type "Terminal" and press "Enter" if you're using Ubuntu. Look in the "Accessories" or "System Tools" submenus in the Applications menu or for a "Terminal" shortcut on the panel or desktop on other Linux distributions.

    • 6

Type "sudo su" on Ubuntu or "su" on other Linux distributions and press "Enter" to become the root user.

    • 7

Type your user account's password on Ubuntu or your root account's password on other Linux distributions at the password prompt, and press "Enter."

    • 8

Type "apt-get install --reinstall totem-mozilla" and press "Enter" to reinstall the plug-in on Ubuntu, Debian or other Debian-based Linux distributions. Consult your Linux distribution's documentation for information on reinstalling packages if you use a different Linux distribution. Different Linux distributions use a wide variety of different software package management programs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Totem is an unofficial plug-in and won't work properly with every video you come across.

  • If Totem can't play videos, try installing the codecs packages from your Linux distribution's software management program. Search "Gstreamer" to see available codec packages.

  • Firefox plays Ogg Theora videos natively and plays Flash videos using the Adobe Flash plug-in, so it only uses the Totem plug-in for other types of videos.
