How to Crochet a Branch

Let images from nature inspire your crafting.

Crocheted motifs come in many forms. They may be geometric shapes, afghan squares or flowers. A crocheted tree branch motif is a less common shape, but is nevertheless elegant and artistic. You can incorporate a crocheted branch motif into a creative display or sew it onto bags, blankets or other items. This pattern creates a basic branch body with sewn felt leaves for embellishment. However, feel free to modify it or further decorate it to fit your crafting needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Make nine chain stitches. Create a slipknot and place the loop on the hook, then catch the yarn and draw it through the loop. Drop the loop in the process to complete the first stitch. You should have a new loop on your hook. Catch the yarn again and draw it through the loop while dropping it to make each of the other eight stitches.

    • 2

Make one single crochet stitch into the second chain stitch from the hook. Insert the hook into the stitch, catch the yarn, draw it through the stitch and bring a new loop up onto the hook. Catch the yarn again and draw it through both loops as you drop them, leaving one new loop remaining.

    • 3

Make one single crochet stitch into each stitch until you come to the end of the row. Make one chain stitch and turn the work around. Repeat this step for 22 rows, then cut the yarn and draw it through the last loop.

    • 4

Make a slipknot and place the loop on your hook. Insert the hook into the side of one stitch about halfway up the main branch body. Make one single crochet stitch into five stitches along the side, then make a chain stitch and turn the work around. Repeat this row pattern for nine rows. Cut the yarn and draw it through the last loop.

    • 5

Make a slipknot and place the loop on your hook. Then insert the hook into the side of one stitch about halfway up the second branch body. Make one single crochet stitch into three stitches along the side, then make a chain stitch and turn the work around. Repeat this row pattern for four rows. Cut the yarn and draw it through the last loop.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 to create another branch from the main branch body. This time work on the other side of the main branch, about three-quarters of the way up. Weave in all the loose ends with the tapestry needle.

    • 7

Cut several leaf shapes from the felt. Sew them onto the tips of the branches with the sewing needle and thread.
