If you toss and turn a lot at night you may wake up with your hair looking worse for wear. Fortunately there are some strategies men and women can use to fight back against "bed head" and reduce the amount of time it takes to get that beautiful hairstyle back.

Before-Bed Braiding

One of the simplest ways to avoid damage to your hair from tossing and turning at night is to loosely braid your hair just before you turn in for the night. This will help to protect your hair and avoid the tangles and flat spots that would otherwise result from a night of tossing and turning in your sleep.

Nightcap

Nightcaps may seem like an old-fashioned solution to nighttime hair damage, but there is a reason that these accessories have been around so long. As far back as your grandparents' and great-grandparents' time, women (and men) have been using nightcaps to protect their hairdos and reduce the chances of damage to those delicate strands. When choosing a nightcap, be sure to look for one made of silk or satin--these soft materials are strong enough to protect your hair but soft enough not to do any damage themselves.

Silk Scarf and Pillowcases

A silk scarf is one of the best ways to protect your hair while you are sleeping. When your hair rubs against the pillow night after night, the ends of the hair strands can become damaged, resulting in split ends and significant damage. This damage can be especially severe if your pillowcases are cotton; a silk or satin pillowcase can reduce the damage somewhat but it is still important to protect your hair while you are sleeping. Slipping on a silk scarf before you go to sleep can protect your hair from damage and reduce those split ends.

Headbands

If you have a long hairstyle and want to reduce the amount of time it takes to get ready in the morning, wearing a headband to bed is a good practice. A soft headband will keep your hair in place and keep it from getting frizzy or flat. When shopping for a headband, be sure to choose a wide one--a narrow headband could damage your hair.
