How to Catch an Opossum

For many areas, opossum is a common wildlife creature. Opossums can be a problem for people as they can be potential hazards for small children and pets. People who don't wish to call for professional help or hurt these creatures can catch and remove them using simple methods. These methods can be applied over and over if the opossum problem is caused by multiple creatures. Learn the steps and be ready in case you are faced with this issue.

Things You'll Need

  • Live-animal trap
  • Canned cat food
  • Thick leather gloves
  • Large box
  • Purchase a live-animal trap and place it in your yard in an area that you know the opossum frequents.

  • Cover the entrance to the trap with dirt or leaves so that the opossum does not feel the trap on its feet when it enters.

  • Open a can of cat food and place it in the back of the cage.

  • Check the trap daily to see if the opossum has been caught. To have the opossum removed, contact your local animal-control service and have them remove the opossum from the cage.

  • Put on a pair of thick leather gloves as well as a shirt or jacket with long sleeves for protection.

  • Approach the opossum and wave a hand in its face to distract it. Grab its tail with your free hand as you are distracting it.

  • Lift the opossum by its tail and hold it out as far from your body as you can. Place it in a large box and contact your local animal control or transport it to a remote area to release it.

  • Remove trash or food that may be laying around your area to prevent opossums from returning.
