How to Outline a Chapter in the Bible
Understanding the Bible can be difficult, but there are tools you can use to make it less complicated. One of those tools is an outline. An outline presents information in a logical, easy to understand format. Outlining a chapter in the Bible can help your personal study as you seek to better understand scripture. Outlining provides assistance for Sunday school teachers, pastors and those who write Bible curriculum.

1
Read the entire chapter two or three times. This will help you become familiar with the chapter's content. Don't begin outlining before you understand what the chapter is about, and don't assume you already know the content. As you read, try to answer basic questions of who, what, when, why, where and how.
-
2
Identify the chapter's main ideas or events and list these on a separate sheet of paper, in the order they occur. Record the verse numbers next to each. Group similar events and ideas under main headings. Some of these may become headings.

3
Organize the outline using a descending, numbered structure. For example, write headings using Roman numerals. Represent supporting ideas by letters, and further points by numbers. Some people use regular numbers for headings instead of Roman numerals, and bullets instead of numbers and letters. Follow your professor's preferred format.
-
4
Import the main headings and supporting points into the outline. Check to make sure you didn't miss important points. Once you complete the outline, you will have a comprehensive snapshot of the chapter. Turn the outline into a handout for your students or congregation as a guide through the chapter.
