How to Write a Mixed Number or Fraction of Hundredths on a Grid

You can use graph paper to create a hundredths grid.

A fractional grid is a visual representation of a fraction. In a grid, you can see the relationship of the part to the whole in terms of a given fraction. The entire grid represents the whole, whereas the colored-in sections represent the fractional units. If you have a grid that is composed of 10 squares by 10 squares, you are looking at a whole of 100 units. Any fractional part of this whole is known as hundredths. You can convert hundredths to a fraction or a mixed number by following a simple counting process.

Instructions

1. Look at the grid or grids present. In a case of multiple grids in which one or more are completely shaded, these shaded grids represent whole numbers. Count the number of grids that are shaded entirely and write the number down. This will be the whole number in a mixed fraction. If there is just one partially shaded grid, you will have a regular fraction rather than a mixed number.

2. Count the number of squares shaded in a partially shaded grid and write the number as a the numerator (top number) in a fraction.

3. Write the number 100 in the denominator (bottom) of the fraction. For instance, if there are 10 squares shaded, you would write 10/100.

4. Reduce the fraction if necessary. If a number can be divided into both the numerator and denominator evenly, the fraction can be reduced. In this example, you can divide 10 and 100 by 10, so that you get the reduced fraction 1/10.

5. Add the whole number if necessary if there were completely shaded grids. For example, if you had 3 completely shaded grids, along with 10 squares shaded in the fourth grid, you would write 3 10/100, or 3 1/10 (reduced form).
