How to Seal a Sidewalk thumbnail
Clean your sidewalk before sealing to keep it looking great and protect it from weather.

Sealing your sidewalk will protect it from weather and other environmental threats such as plant-life stains. Sealing also keeps stains from motor oil and other fluids from permanently discoloring your sidewalk. Homeowners who live in climates that include cold winters should seal their concrete sidewalks to prevent the cracking that occurs from freezing and thawing of the concrete. Before you seal the sidewalk, you should clean it properly to seal in the clean finish and seal out anything that would damage it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Mix the detergent cleanser in a bucket with warm or hot water. Spread the solution over the area of the sidewalk you intend to seal. Scrub the sidewalk with the scrub brush, paying particular attention to any stains on the sidewalk.

    • 2

Mix a separate solution of hot water and chemical stain remover. Spread the solution over any areas on the sidewalk where metal stains or rust is present. Scrub the area until the stain is gone or as faint as your efforts will leave it.

    • 3

Rinse the sidewalk. Use a hose to wash the detergent and chemical stain remover from the concrete.

    • 4

Use the roller to apply the mason concrete sealer. Roll the sealer over the entire sidewalk. One coat will suffice unless the brand of sealer you have chosen calls for additional coats.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do your best to schedule your sealing for a day when rain is not in the forecast for at least 24 hours to give the sealer the necessary time to dry.
