Instructions for SCBA Donning
When wearing equipment that contains potentially dangerous materials such as compressed gas it is important that you put it on correctly. Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is breathing equipment used by persons such as firefighters when going into an area with a poor supply of air, which allows them to breath freely. Donning the SCBA unit can be done in the same way as putting on a coat and you need to make sure that you keep all the hoses free from entanglement. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Look at the gauge of the SCBA unit. The reading must indicate that the tank is 100 percent full if being used in a fire department according to Walled Lake Fire Department. Top up the cylinder, if needed. You should try and start with the cylinder full to ensure that you have as much air as possible if using the SCBA for other purposes.
-
2
Open the cylinder valve slowly for three to four turns and listen to the low air alarm sound as the gas goes into the system. Open the cylinder valve fully. Compare the cylinder gauge to the regulator gauge and check that they are within 100 psi of each other.

3
Spread and fully extend the harness straps.
-
4
Position the unit with the cylinder valve facing you. Grasp the left shoulder strap with your left hand at the top of the backplate. Grasp the lower side of the left strap with your right hand. The left shoulder strap should be on your right as you face the SCBA unit.
-
5
Lift the unit and swing around your left shoulder onto your back. Keep hold of the shoulder strap with your left hand and feed your right hand through the right shoulder strap.
-
6
Lean forward to balance the unit. Pull on the shoulder straps to tighten them. Grasp the waist strap and buckle the belt securely.
-
7
Hold the head harness in one hand and place the face piece on your face. Pull the head harness over your head and tighten the the neck, lower and temple straps. Ensure there are no twists in the straps.
-
8
Place your hand over the regulator opening. Inhale slowly to test the seal. The face piece should collapse against the face. Pull on the protective hood. Connect the hose to the regulator on the face mask. Airflow will begin when you breath.
