How to Make a Clay Hobbit Hole
Build a model of a hobbit hole from The Lord of the Rings with air-drying modeling clay. Air-drying modeling clay is convenient because it comes in different colors and doesn't require baking to get it to harden permanently. Hobbit holes are built into the side of a hill, so you will need to use a method for making a round hill of clay. Use tools to add details and texture to make it look like the home of a hobbit.

1
Blow up a balloon and cover the top-half of the balloon in a layer of green air-drying modeling clay and leave a 3-inch-wide circle on one side bare with no clay. Leave one or two other small circles bare for the windows of the hobbit hole. Press two small sticks in a cross in the windows as a frame for the window panes.

2
Texture the green clay with a pen to make it look like grass and wait 24 to 48 hours for the clay to dry. Pop the balloon and discard the rubber. Place the "hill" in a small box like a shoebox.

Roll a block of dark-brown, air-drying modeling clay into a ball and flatten the ball to about 1/2-inch thick circle as wide as the hole you left in the green "hill" you made. This is the door to the hobbit hole. Press the door into the hole and lightly etch a woodgrain design into the door. Roll a small black ball and press it against one side of the door for the doorknob.

Flatten two 2-inch wide squares of gray clay and lay them in front of the door as steps. Wait 48 hours for the hobbit hill to dry all the way.
