Crochet around a rubber band to make a custom ponytail holder or doll's waistband.

1/4-inch rubber bands, commonly used as hair wraps, have a lot of stretch, making them ideal waistbands for crocheted doll clothing. Working into the bands with a crochet hook can be difficult, but is possible with very fine yarn and a very small hook. Use crochet cotton, an ideal material for this project that can usually be purchased in large spools at craft stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a slipknot and hang it from the end of your crochet hook.

    • 2

Insert the hook into the center of the rubber band, with the slipknot in front of the band and the curved part of the hook behind it. The working yarn should be behind the band.

    • 3

Wrap the yarn around the hook, behind the rubber band, from right to left. Pull the wrap through the band so that the two loops on your hook are in front of the band. The strand of working yarn should go through the center of the band.

    • 4

Wrap the yarn around the hook again and pull the wrap through the two loops on the hook, making your first single crochet stitch around the band.

    • 5

Work all the way around the band in single crochet, pushing the stitches close together to completely cover the band.

    • 6

Finish the round with a slip stitch.Tie off your work and use your crochet hook to pull the tail into the stitches to hide it. Alternatively, continue with a second round of crochet, working into the first round of stitches.
