Step-by-Step on How to Crochet a Bag

Step-by-Step on How to Crochet a Bag thumbnail
Crocheted bags are good intermediate crochet projects.

Crocheted bags are an easy intermediate crochet project. They can be made from almost any weight of string. Fine string is good for making small bags; heavy yarns are good for making large bags. A drawstring bag, with simple chain-stitch pulls can be made in large or small sizes. They can be used for storage, grocery bags, toy bags, craft bags or hand bags. Tiny bags can be used to protect small items that will be placed in a larger container.

Instructions

    • 1

Chain six stitches. Insert the hook into the first stitch in the chain, draw a loop through the stitch and the loop on the hook. Single chain twice in each of the six initial stitches, going around the chain in a circle. Continue in this fashion, forming a flat bottom for the bag, till the desired size of bag is reached.

    • 2

Single chain in each stitch at the outside edge of the bottom. This will cause the bag to cup. Continue in this fashion till your are within one or two inches of the top. Work one row of double chains, then return to single chain. Continue to single chain for two or three rows around the top. Clip the thread, and pull the end through the final loop. Work the loose end of the thread back through the edge of the top to hide it.

    • 3

Make two single chain strings that are twice the width of the bag. On one side of the bag, weave one of the single chains through the double chain row of the bag till you are back to the starting point. Knot the ends of the chain together. Weave the other single chain string through the double chain row from the opposite side of the bag, all the way around to where you began with the second chain. Knot the ends of the single chain string together.

Pull on the ends of the single chain strings, and the bag will close. If you wish, you can add a tassle or other decoration to the ends of the pull strings. Another possible embellishment is to sew a ring to each side of the bag. Pull on these rings to open the bag.
