How to Play "Need for Speed: Underground"

"Need for Speed: Underground" is a fast-paced racing game that takes place out of sight, at night and away from authority figures. The game was released for the PC, PS2 and Xbox in 2003. More than 20 unique racers are available, including the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Hyundai Tiburon GT V6 and Nissan 350Z. "Need for Speed: Underground" features an in-depth story mode with full motion video and modes designed to give you more racing options. Memorizing track layouts and becoming familiar with how your car handles is integral to winning.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the game mode you want to play from the main menu. "Go Underground," story mode and "Quick Race" are available immediately. Story mode introduces you to characters and cars, while Quick Race allows you go directly to a race.

    • 2

Select a car for the race. With the exception of story mode, you'll be allowed to pick from a large list of cars. Make your choice based on the type of race map. A car with substantial turning and drifting characteristics is useless on a map with a lot of straightaways, such as Olympic Square Park.

    • 3

Hold the throttle ("Up" arrow on PC, "X" on the PS2 and "Right Trigger" on the Xbox) at the start of each race to maximize your starting speed. If you're using a manual transmission, use the shift up ("Insert" on the PC, "R2" on the PS2 and "X" on the Xbox) and shift down ("Delete" on the PC, "L2" on the PS2 and "Y" on the Xbox) buttons to switch gears. Optimize shift changes by waiting until the speedometer indicator needle is almost touching the red.

    • 4

Drift tight corners by pressing the emergency brake ("Shift" on the PC, "Right Stick" on the PS2 and "A" on the Xbox) immediately as the car enters the turn. Tap the button as much or as little as needed to stay on the inside of the turn. The amount of braking depends on the turn.

    • 5

Press the "Nitrous" button ("Space Bar" on the PC, "L1" on the PS2 and "B" on the Xbox) to give your car a temporary speed boost. If you're falling behind, wait until you are close enough to an opponent for the nitrous to make a difference. If you are ahead, use the nitrous to expand your lead.
