How to Crochet Jackets for Adults

Crochet fashions are a hot trend right now and what better way to make a statement than to make your own creation. The experienced crocheter can make this intricate and beautiful wool jacket that is sure to make others envious. Perfect for winter but can also be worn through the seasons. Crochet is a versatile pastime and has the potential to be profitable as well.

• 11 3oz skeins wool yarn in color of your choice

Directions

1. Crochet the long panels. Chain 30 and double crochet in fourth chain from hook and in each chain across and turn.

   For row two, chain two and half double crochet. Skip next three then back post treble crochet and working in front of stitch half double crochet in the skipped stitches. Half double crochet then back post double crochet. Repeat twice more then half double crochet. Work back post cable over next six. Repeat twice more leaving out cable. Skip next stitch and half double crochet in next three. Working behind stitches back post treble crochet in skipped stitches. Half double crochet in next two then turn and work 16 half double crochets, four back post double crochets, and eight back post treble crochets.

   For row three, chain two and half double crochet. Skip next stitch and half double crochet in next three. Working in front of stitches front post treble crochet in skipped stitches. Half double crochet then front post double crochet and repeat nine times. Half double crochet and skip next three stitches. Front post treble crochet and working behind half double crochet in skipped stitches. Half double crochet twice and turn. Work 16 half double crochets, four front post double crochets, and eight front post treble crochets.

   For row four, work row two, skipping last step and turn.

   For row five, chain two and half double crochet. Skip next stitch and half double crochet in next three. Working in front of stitches front post treble crochet in skipped stitches. Half double crochet then front post double crochet and repeat twice more. Half double crochet and work front post cable over next six. Half double crochet then front post double crochet and repeat twice more. Half double crochet then skip next three stitches and front post treble crochet. Working behind stitch half double crochet in three skipped stitches. Half double crochet in next two and turn.

   For row six, repeat row four. For row seven, repeat row three. For rows eight through 103, repeat rows two through seven. For row 104, chain one and single crochet across then fasten off. Repeat for the second long panel.

2. Crochet left front panel. With right side facing, join yarn with a single crochet in edge of first row of panel. For row one, working along side edge of panel single crochet in edge of same row. Single crochet in next row then do two single crochets in next row and single crochet in next row and repeat all the way across. Fasten off and repeat on the other long panel. Begin on the wrong side for the right front panel.

3. Crochet underarm panel. With wrong side facing, join yarn with single crochet in edge of first row on the opposite panel from front. For row one, work along side edge and single crochet in edge of same row. Single crochet in next row then do two single crochets in next row and single crochet in next row. Repeat across and fasten off. Repeat on other long panel beginning on right side of panel.

4. Crochet short back panel. Chain ten then work on right side and double crochet in fourth chain from hook and each chain across and turn.

   For row two, chain two and work back post double crochet over six stitches. Half double crochet and turn. Do two half double crochets and six back post treble crochets.

   For row three, chain two and front post treble crochet in six stitches. Half double crochet then turn and do two half double crochets and six back post treble crochets.

   For row four, chain two and back post treble crochet in six stitches. Half double crochet and turn.

   For row five, chain two and work front post cable over six stitches. Half double crochet and turn.

   For row six repeat row four. For row seven repeat row three. For rows eight through 49 repeat rows two through seven.

   For row 50 repeat row two. For row 51 repeat row three. For row 52, chain one and single crochet across and fasten off.

5. Crochet panel edging. Join yarn with a single crochet in edge of first row. For row one work along side edge. Single crochet in edge of same row. Single crochet in next row then do two single crochets in next row and single crochet in next row. Repeat across. Repeat this process along opposite side edge panel.

6. Assemble the pieces. Arrange the short back panel between the two long back panels and against the short edges of front. With yarn needle, matching up the long panels with the short panel, whipstitch together through back loops only. For side seam, fold long panel in half. Matching up the long panel and underarm panel, whipstitch together through back loops only through first 54 stitches of long panel leaving remaining open for sleeve. Repeat process for second side seam.

7. Crochet sleeves. For round one with right-side facing, join yarn with a single crochet in any unworked stitch around armhole. Single crochet around and join with a slip stitch in first single crochet.

   For round two, chain three and double crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch in top of beginning chain.

   For round three, chain two and front post double crochet. Half double crochet then front post double crochet and repeat all the way around. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain.

   For round four repeat round two. For round five, chain two and half double crochet in each stitch. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain.

   For round six, chain one and single crochet in each stitch. Join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet.

   For round seven, skip two stitches. Front post treble crochet around next stitch of round five. Working behind stitch double crochet in two skipped stitches. Join with a slip stitch in first front post treble crochet.

   For round eight, repeat round six. For round nine, repeat round five. For round ten, repeat round two.

   For round 11, chain one then single crochet in and single crochet two stitches together. Single crochet in next nine then single crochet two stitches together and repeat three more times. Single crochet in each stitch until end and join with a slip stitch in first single crochet.

   For round 12, repeat round five. For round 13, repeat round three. For round 14, repeat round two. For round 15, repeat round 11 through 40 stitches. For round 16, repeat round two.

   For round 17, work cross post over next two stitches to the end and join with a slip stitch in first double crochet.

   For round 18, repeat round two working only in back loops. For round 19, repeat round six.

   For round 20, chain three and front post treble crochet in next stitch of round 18. Double crochet then front post treble crochet in next stitch of round 18 and repeat to end. Join with a slip stitch in top of beginning chain.

   For round 21, repeat round 20 but work in round 19. For round 22, repeat round 20 and work in round 20. For round 23, repeat round six working only in back loops. For round 24, repeat round six. For round 25, repeat round two. For round 26, repeat round five. For round 27, repeat round six.

   For round 28, chain three and front post treble crochet in next stitch of round 26. Double crochet then front post treble crochet in next stitch of round 26 and repeat until the end. Join with a slip stitch in top of the beginning chain.

   For round 29, repeat round six. For round 30, chain one then single crochet and single crochet two stitches together. Single crochet in seven stitches then single crochet two stitches together and repeat three times. Single crochet to end and join with a slip stitch in first single crochet.

   For round 31, repeat round two. For round 32, repeat round five working only in back loops. For round 33, repeat round five.

   For round 34, chain two and front post double crochet in next stitch of round 33. Half double crochet then front post double crochet and repeat to end. Join with a slip stitch in the top of beginning chain.

   For round 35, repeat round six. For round 36, chain three and front post treble crochet in next stitch of round 34. Double crochet then front post treble crochet in next stitch of round 34 and repeat to end. Join with a slip stitch in the top of beginning chain.

   For round 37, repeat round six. For round 38, repeat round two. For round 39, repeat round six working only in back loops. For round 40, repeat round five. For round 41, repeat round six.

   For round 42, chain three and front post treble crochet in next stitch of round 40. Double crochet then front post treble crochet in next stitch of round 40 and repeat to end. Join with a slip stitch in the top of beginning chain.

   For round 43, repeat round six. For round 44, repeat round two and fasten off. Repeat pattern for second sleeve.

8. Crochet the collar. Chain 25. For row one work on right side. Double crochet in fourth chain from hook and in each chain across and turn.

   For row two, chain two and half double crochet. Back post cable over next six stitches then half double crochet in next two and skip next three. Back post treble crochet in next stitch. Working in front of stitch half double crochet in three skipped stitches. Half double crochet then back post double crochet and half double crochet. Skip next stitch then half double crochet in next three. Working behind stitches back post treble crochet in skipped stitches. Half double crochet in two stitches and turn. Do 14 half double crochets, one back post double crochet, and eight back post treble crochets.

   For row three, chain two and half double crochet. Skip next stitch and half double crochet in next three. Working in front of stitches front post treble crochet in skipped stitches. Half double crochet then front post double crochet and half double crochet. Skip next three and front post treble crochet. Working behind stitches half double crochet in three skipped stitches and half double crochet in next two. Front post treble crochet in next six then half double crochet in next two and turn.

   For row four, chain two and half double crochet. Back post treble crochet in next six and half double crochet in next two. Skip next three stitches and back post treble crochet. Working in front of stitches half double crochet in skipped stitches. Half double crochet then back post double crochet and half double crochet. Skip the next stitch and half double crochet in next three. Working behind stitch back post treble crochet in skipped stitch. Half double crochet in next two and turn.

   For row five, chain two and half double crochet in next stitch. Skip next stitch and half double crochet in next three stitches. Working in front of stitch just made, front post treble crochet in skipped stitch. Half double crochet in next stitch then front post double crochet and half double crochet. Skip next three stitches and front post treble crochet in next stitch. Working behind stitch just made, half double crochet in the three skipped stitches then half double crochet in next two stitches. Work front post cable over next six stitches then half double crochet in next two stitches and turn.

   For row six, repeat row four. For row seven, chain two and half double crochet in next stitch. Skip next stitch and half double crochet in next three stitches. Working in front of stitch just made front post treble crochet in skipped stitch and half double crochet in next stitch. Front post double crochet in next stitch then half double crochet and skip next three stitches. Front post treble crochet and working behind stitch half double crochet in three skipped stitches. Half double crochet in next two stitches then front post treble crochet in next six stitches and half double crochet in next two stitches and turn.

   For rows eight through 109, repeat rows two through seven. For row 110, repeat row two. Crochet the edging with right side facing by joining yarn with a single crochet in edge of first row of collar. Working along the side edge, single crochet in edge of same row then single crochet in next row. Do two single crochets in next row then single crochet in row and repeat to end. Fasten off and repeat on the other edge of the collar.

9. Finish the jacket. With yarn needle match up stitches of collar with stitches of right front panel and whipstitch together through back loops. Continue in the same manner with left collar stitches and left front panel. Weave in the ends.

Tips & Warnings

• If back post stitches behind stitches prove too difficult, the same affect can be accomplished by turning the work and doing a front post stitch and turning back again.
