Use a reputable search engine. While search engines such as Google or Bing may turn up a lot of information that you don't want or need, they can also help you find quality links. Google also features a function in their Chrome browser that allows users to preview a thumbnail version of the Web page prior to clicking on the link for it. This can make it easier to distinguish quality links from bad ones.

Allow your virus protection to scan the link before you click it. This may take an extra few seconds, but it will alert you to possibly harmful links and sites and can prevent your computer from downloading a virus or unwanted tracking cookies that can damage your computer or lead to identity theft. If your virus protection software is not already set up to automatically check websites before it transfers the user, change the settings in either the program settings for the virus protection software or in the advanced Internet settings on your computer.

Verify website certification. Many links will automatically notify you of any website security certifications that may be in place. Avoid using links where the certification for the website has been revoked or is expired. An expired certificate may be a sign of a bad link.

Go directly to the source. In some instances, such as if you are searching for quality links to information on Microsoft products, you will see the option to go directly to the source of reputable links and information on the product, the Microsoft website. Whenever possible, use links that go directly to the source of the information that you are looking for. Beware any website link that presents itself as legitimate but does not list the company's name prominently in the website address link.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take the time to read the short description of the website link under the header in your search engine. These can provide information useful in determining the quality of the link.

  • Do not click on any links that do not seem reputable. If the company name is not listed in the link, chances are it won't send you to the company's website.
