How to Use Grunge Brushes for Borders in Photoshop
Grunge effects are added to images to give them a dirty or worn appearance. This sort of effect is often used on graphics intended for music-related posters, CD covers or websites. One option is to add a grunge border around the edge of a photo. If you are using Photoshop, the key to creating this effect quickly and professionally is to use the right tools.

1
Load the photo to which you want to add the grunge border onto your computer.
-
2
Start Photoshop. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog that appears, locate and open the photo that you loaded.

3
Select the "Burn" tool from the toolbar on the left. Go to the options at the top and choose a brush with a faded tip. Paint over the border areas randomly with the brush. This will darken those areas. You are not trying to achieve a uniform effect, so do not cover all of the border.

Select the "Dodge" tool from the toolbar on the left. Go to the options at the top and choose a brush with a faded tip. Paint over the border areas in a few spots where you did not use the "Burn" tool. This will wash out those areas.

Select "File" from the menu and choose "Save As." In the dialog that appears, name the file and click "Save."
