How to Create a Vector Composite of a Photo

The vector image effect can make a photo look unique.

Vector images have many advantages over traditional bitmap images. Vector images can be zoomed to an almost infinite level and still maintain their detail. This makes them ideal for printing on large formats. Creating a vector image of a photo also creates an interesting, unique look. Instead of spending hours in a photo editing program creating a vector image, you can use a free online tool to do most of the work for you.

Instructions

1. Visit Vector Magic's homepage (see Resources) in your favorite Web browser.

2. Click "Upload Image to Trace" and navigate to your image file in the window that opens and click "Open." The tool will begin analyzing and tracing your image.

3. Adjust the detail level by clicking "High," "Medium" or "Low." Higher settings will stay more true to the original image, while lower settings will create a more distinct effect, with more contrast between colors and more defined edges.

4. Click "Custom Colors" under the "Colors" heading to change the color palette. Choosing fewer colors will create a more vectorized effect. Double-click to choose the palette.

5. Click "Download Result" when you are satisfied with your image. Create a free account and choose a location for your saved image.
