How to Install Electrical Outlets in a Garage

Installing more outlets in your garage can prevent a fire hazard like this.

For some homeowners, a garage is more than a place to park their cars or use as storage space. Some people use their garages as workshops. If this is the case, electrical outlets can be at a premium with the number of tools and equipment you need to complete different projects. You can install electrical outlets in different areas of the garage to meet your needs.

Things You'll Need

• Electrical boxes
• Stud finder
• Drywall saw
• Electrical cable
• Wire stripper
• Utility knife
• Screwdriver
• Electrical tape
• Plate covers
• Electrician

Instructions

1. Choose the locations where you are installing the outlets. Follow local building codes regarding spacing and height requirements.

2. Install the electrical boxes for the outlets. If the garage wall is unfinished, install new-work electrical boxes onto the studs. If the wall is finished, locate the studs with a stud finder and then cut a hole in the drywall next to the studs with a drywall saw. Use an old-work electrical box for a finished wall.

3. Run an electrical cable from your home's main cable box to the outlets.

4. Punch out the knockout holes on the outlet boxes and slide the cable through them.

5. Remove about an inch of the sheathing around the cable with a wire stripper or utility knife and then remove about 1/2-inch of insulation from the individual wires.

6. Connect the wires from the electrical cable to the screws on the outlet, following the manufacturer's instructions.

7. Wrap electrical tape around the terminals on the sides of the outlet.

8. Slide the outlet into the box and screw it to the box.

9. Screw the plate cover onto the outlet.

10. Install the other outlets, using the same method.

11. Hire an electrician to connect the cables to your home's main electrical box. Most municipalities require this.

Tips & Warnings

• If you're not comfortable installing the outlets, hire an electrician to do the entire project.
