How to Make a GIR Costume

Gir was a character from the animated series Invader Zim which aired on Nickelodeon from 2001 to 2002. In the series, the title character, Zim, is an alien determined to invade Earth. As he gathers intelligence, he poses undercover as a human. Gir is Zim's sidekick, a robot made of spare parts who is loyal but not very smart. His cover is that of a dog and in the series he is often seen wearing a dog suit. You can easily make a Gir costume at home patterned off of Gir's characteristic dog suit.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut four triangles from the black fabric, approximately one palm's length wide. Cut two leaf shapes, approximately one and a half palm lengths wide. Thread the needle with the black thread. Then sew the two triangles, the other two triangles and the two leaf shapes with the right sides together but leaving one side unsewn. Turn the shapes inside out through the unsewn side. Press them flat with the iron. Stitch the last side closed. Sew the two triangles to the hoodie on either side of the head. This is to simulate Gir's dog ears. Sew the leaf shape to the back of the shorts to simulate Gir's tail.

Take one of the pairs of black tights and, using the scissors, snip out the crotch area as well as the foot seams. Then put on the pair of stockings as you would a shirt. Be sure to cut the former crotch hole wider if your head doesn't fit easily through it. Put the other pair of black tights on your legs as you would normally. These tights simulate the black arms and legs of Gir's dog suit.

Cut the sleeves off the green zippered hooded sweatshirt with your scissors. Put the sweatshirt on, but not the hood yet, and zip it all the way up. Put the green shorts on. If you have long hair, be sure to tie it back and out of the way with an elastic hair band. Apply the green cream makeup base to your face and neck. Then with the fine makeup brush, brush on short vertical black lines from the top of your forehead down the middle of your face to your neck. Draw one line, then leave a space and so on. This is to simulate the stitching of Gir's dog suit. Put the hood over your head.

Put on the pair of goggles. This simulates Gir's large bug-shaped eyes. Put on the black shoes. Black ballerina flats are a good choice for women but any type of all-black shoe will do. To finish off the costume, put on the black gloves.

Tips & Warnings

  • A Gir costume is appropriate for both men and women.
