Sewing: How to Use a Turner
Turn sewn fabrics right side out quickly and easily by using a point or loop turner. A point turner pushes the corners out on sewn pillows or other items with creases, creating a professional look. A loop turner will turn a thin tube of fabric, such as a spaghetti strap, right side out. Both tools are inexpensive and simple to learn how to use. They'll change the way you sew and make your items look professional.
Things You'll Need
- 2 squares of fabric
- Straight pins
- Matching thread
- Sewing machine
- Point turner
- Strip of fabric
- Loop turner

Use Point Turner

Lay the two squares of fabric on top of each other, right sides together, and pin together along all four sides.

Sew the fabric together with a 1/2-inch seam. Leave a gap for turning the fabric right side out.

Turn the fabrics right side out. Slide the point turner inside the squares and push the pointy end of the turner into the corners, pushing them out to make sharp edges. Don't push too hard; you don't want to poke a hole through the seams or fabric.

Use the rounded end of the point turner to smooth out the seams along the sides of the pillow.
Use a Loop Turner

Fold the strip of fabric in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin along one long side, then sew with a 1/4-inch seam.

Push the loop turner through the folded strip of fabric. Hold the loop end in your right hand and push the turner until the hooked end emerges from the other side of the tube. Hook the hooked end onto the edge of the fabric.

Hold the hooked end of the fabric with your left hand while you pull on the looped end of the turner with your right. The fabric will begin to gather near the hooked end of the turner and will start to turn right side out.

Keep pulling on the looped end until the tube of fabric is completely right side out.

Tips & Warnings
The hook may detach itself from the fabric when using a loop turner. If that happens, simply re-attach it before continuing.
You can use a wooden or bamboo point turner to create sharp creases with an iron. Simply iron the fabric over the turner.
