How to Fix Similar Tags in WordPress

When you create posts in WordPress, you have the option to tag them with a short, descriptive name. If a reader clicks on a tag, she will see all of your posts that have the same tag. Sometimes, you accidentally create similar, unnecessary tags by accident. For example, you could have a "book" tag and a "books" tag. You can remove the unwanted tag to better organize your WordPress blog.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign into your WordPress admin dashboard.

    • 2

Click "Posts" in the left-hand menu and click "Post Tags." A list of all tags on your site displays.

    • 3

Check the boxes next to the unneeded, similar tags.

    • 4

Click the "Bulk Actions" drop-down menu and select "Delete." Click "Apply."

    • 5

Click "Posts" in the left-hand menu. You should see a list of all of your posts. If you need to re-tag a post because it had only the tag you deleted, move your cursor over the post name and click "Edit."

    • 6

Enter a tag in the "Post Tags" field making sure it is a tag that you did not delete. Click the "Add" button.

    • 7

Click the "Update" button to publish the post with the new tag.
