1
Research the type of bird you want to attract to your homemade bird nest. Look for habitat preferences. For instance, a bluebird will build a nest in a yard approximately three to five feet off the ground. On the other hand, a tree swallow prefers open fields near water and they nest at a much higher height -- five to fifteen feet.

2
Test the supporting branch to make sure it is strong enough to hold a nest. Consider the added weight of a family of birds.

3
Place the nest in an area that is shaded from midday sunlight. An area with morning sun is generally favorable.
-
4
Place a homemade nest so that the entrance hole is well covered by shrubbery and leaves. Face the entrance hole away from prevailing wind. However, you do not want to hide the entrance hole. Birds like clear paths into and out of a nest.
-
5
Consider the threat of nearby predators. A nest placed too low may attracts cats and snakes. A nest placed too high may attract birds of prey. Be attentive to the surrounding environment. Birds prefer nesting areas with an ample food source.
