How to Post on Rootsweb

Rootsweb is a website dedicated to genealogy and genealogical issues; it is one of several websites run by Ancestry.com. Rootsweb hosts a message board where members can exchange genealogical information, ask questions of other members and discuss related topics. Posting questions and comments to the Rootsweb message boards is relatively straightforward.

Instructions

      Sign in to your Rootsweb account by clicking "Sign In" at the top right-hand corner of any page in the site and entering your username and password into the designated fields.

      Direct your browser to the main page of the message boards (boards.rootsweb.com).

      Select the category you wish to post in. Categories are broken up by locality and topic. You may also search for a specific topic or browse through topics by clicking on a letter of the alphabet.

      Click on the thread to which you want to contribute. This will open up the message thread.

      Click "Reply" to post a message that pertains to a specific comment or question. This will open a page that allows you to create and post a message. "Reply" is located on the lower right-hand corner of every message.

      Write your message in the large text box labeled "Message."

      Click the blue button beneath your message that is labeled "Post."

Tips & Warnings

  • You may want to post a new message instead of contributing to an existing thread. In this case, simply click "Begin New Thread" and fill out the message as usual. In this case, however, you must be certain that you fill out the box labeled "Subject." "Begin New Thread" is located on the left under the Category title in every message board, toward the top of the page.
