How to Knit a Reversible Cable
With their twists and turns, knitted cables give garments a lot of texture and visual interest. They also make a thicker fabric than some other stitch patterns, making cables a good choice for scarves. The downside is that traditional cables create a very obvious reverse side. However if you start with a basic ribbing stitch, you can create a reversible cable for your next project.

Cast on 24 stitches for this sample with two reversible cables.

Knit two stitches and purl two stitches across the row. Repeat for three rows. The ribbing sets up the reversible cable.

Knit the first two stitches to begin the cable row. Slip the next four stitches onto a cable needle and hold the needle behind the work. Purl the next two stitches on the knitting needle, followed by two knit stitches. Purl the first two stitches on the cable needle followed by two knit stitches. Purl the next two stitches and knit the next two. Slip the next four stitches onto a cable needle and hold the needle in front of the work. Purl two and knit two. Purl two and knit two on the cable needle. Purl the last two stitches.

Continue with knit two, purl two ribbing for four rows.

Repeat the cable row.

Tips & Warnings
Don't twist the cable needle when you reposition it. Just push it behind the work or rest it in front.
Although it may not look like it at first, you are just knitting a 2 by 2 ribbing throughout. Just knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.
