S.C. Johnson's Drano is a commercial cleaner for clogged drains. It contains powerful elements that create the chemical reaction necessary to clear the plumbing. The combination of these elements makes the cleaner both toxic and pungent. Spilling this product releases the pungent smell to surrounding areas. As with any odoriferous spills, the first step to neutralizing the odor is to remove any visible evidence of the cleaner. Since this product is toxic, it is best to protect yourself when you handle it.
Step 1
Blot up any remnants of the Drano with a cotton cloth or paper towels. Wear rubber gloves, a facemask and protective clothing while you work.

Pour white vinegar or lemon juice on the affected area to neutralize the Drano. Use enough to saturate the area and let it sit for about five minutes. Vinegar and lemon juice neutralize odors and will prevent any remaining traces of the Drano from eating through the affected surface. Blot up the liquid with paper towels or a cotton cloth.
Step 3
Rinse the area clean with water. Use an absorbent cloth to soak up as much of the moisture as possible. Let the area dry completely.
Step 4
Open the windows and doors to air the room and help with the drying. Do this daily, until the area is dry and the smell disappears.
