You can replace most bulbs with CFLs.

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) help keep cash in your wallet by using less electricity than incandescent bulbs. You pay less for power with no sacrifice on light levels. To make the switch to CFLs, think about the sort of light you need and which lamps you can switch. Cool and warm CFLs are available. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Find the lamps in your home where you wish to change over to CFL bulbs from hotter burning incandescent bulbs. Any screw-in bulb can be changed. CFLs burn cooler, so there aren't heat issues.

    • 2

Figure out the wattage needed. CFL bulbs use less power. You only need 25 percent of the wattage compared to an incandescent for approximately equal light. Remove each incandescent and multiply the its wattage by .25.

    • 3

Decide if you prefer cool, daylight or warm light for each lamp. Cool is good for reading or work spaces. Warm is best at creating atmosphere and gentle light. Daylight is similar to full-spectrum and works if you like that intensity.

    • 4

Purchase CFL bulbs in the new denominations for each lamp, with the selected color characteristics. CFLs come in a variety of shapes. Get the same shape as the incandescent bulb being replaced for simplicity.

    • 5

Replace the incandescent bulbs. Simply screw the new CFL light into the lamp as you would an incandescent bulb. They are manufactured for easy home use.
