How to Crochet Tube Socks

Crochet your own tube socks in every color.

Nothing feels better in the winter than a thick pair of tube socks. Store-bought socks are usually made out of thin cotton, but homemade, crocheted tube socks are thick and warm. Making crochet socks is fast and inexpensive. Crocheting a pair of socks takes about two or three hours. Most pairs of socks take one skein of yarn and cost only a few dollars.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Basic Crochet Stitches

    • 1

Cast on the yarn by wrapping the yarn around the crochet hook, catching the yarn facing the yarn skein with the crochet hook and pulling it through the loop on the hook.

    • 2

Create a chain stitch by catching the yarn on the side facing the yarn skein and pulling it through the loop on the hook. This makes one single crochet.

    • 3

Form a single crochet by sliding the crochet hook through the stitch where you want the single crochet stitch. Catch the yarn facing the yarn skein and pull it through the stitch. Catch the yarn facing the yarn skein again and pull it through both loops on the crochet hook.

    Crochet The Socks

    • 4

Cast on the yarn and chain 58 stitches. This creates the first row.

    • 5

Make a single crochet into the second chain stitch away from the crochet hook. Make a single crochet into each chain stitch all the way down the first row. When you get to the end, chain one stitch. Continue following this pattern for 30 rows. For a person with narrow calves, make 26 rows. For a person with large calves, make 32 rows.

    • 6

Cut the yarn facing the skein of yarn 4 inches away from the crochet hook. Pull the cut end of the string through the last single crochet and weave the leftover yarn through the other stitches.

    • 7

Repeat all of the steps and make a second sock. (Use the same color so that the socks match.)

    Sew The Socks

    • 8

Cut a piece of yarn 4 feet long and thread the needle. Pull the thread through the needle until there are two even pieces hanging down. Tie a knot at the end, farthest away from the needle.

    • 9

Lay one of the crocheted sock pieces on a flat surface. The crocheted piece has lines formed during crocheting. Turn the piece so that the lines run toward you.

    • 10

Fold the left side toward the right. Line up the left and right side neatly and pin it in place with straight pins. Sew a straight line up the pinned side and tie a knot at the end of the row. Sew a line across one of the short ends. This end becomes the toe area of the sock. Repeat this procedure on the second sock -- and then enjoy your warm socks.
