Tutorial on How to Crochet a Beanie

Tutorial on How to Crochet a Beanie thumbnail
A basic crochet beanie is an appropriate pattern for beginners.

Beanies are not only a great way to keep your ears warm on a cold day, but they are also an easy project for beginning crocheters. This simple single crochet beanie pattern is appropriate for someone just learning to work in the round and make basic crochet stitches. The finished product will fit most adults, measuring approximately 5 inches high and 7 inches wide when worked with medium-weight yarn. The beanie is started at the crown, increased to the appropriate width and then lengthened. The last round is decreased slightly to ensure the rim fits snugly.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Make a slipknot with the loose end of the yarn. Insert the hook into the slipknot. Chain three, and slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring.

    • 2

Make 10 single crochets into the ring. Place a round marker (made specifically for marking rounds in woven projects) or a safety pin in the first stitch to keep track of where the round ends and where the next one begins. Since this beanie is worked entirely in single crochet, there isn't a need to join the rounds. Instead, the beanie is worked in a spiral.

    • 3

Make two single crochets in each stitch around for a total of 20 single crochets. Place the marker in the first single crochet in this round immediately after you crochet it.

    • 4

Make two single crochets in the next stitch and one single crochet in the following stitch. Repeat this nine more times for a total of 30 single crochets. Place the marker in the first single crochet in this round immediately after you crochet it.

    • 5

Make two single crochets in the next stitch and one single crochet in each of the next two stitches. Repeat this nine more times for a total of 40 single crochets. Place the marker in the first single crochet in this round immediately after you crochet it.

    • 6

Make two single crochets in the next stitch and one single crochet in each of the next three stitches. Repeat this nine more times for a total of 50 single crochets. Place the marker in the first single crochet in this round immediately after you crochet it.

    • 7

Make two single crochets in the next stitch and one single crochet in each of the next four stitches. Repeat this nine more times for a total of 60 single crochets. Place the marker in the first single crochet in this round immediately after you crochet it.

    • 8

Make two single crochets in the next stitch and one single crochet in each of the next five stitches. Repeat this nine more times for a total of 70 single crochets. Place the marker in the first single crochet in this round immediately after you crochet it.

    • 9

Make one single crochet in each stitch around for a total of 70 single crochets. Place the marker in the first single crochet of the round immediately after you crochet it.

    • 10

Repeat Step 9 nineteen more times, for a total of 20 rounds of single crochet with no increase.

    • 11

Single crochet the next two stitches together, and make one single crochet in each of the next 14 stitches. Repeat 4 times for a total of 65 stitches. Slip stitch in the next stitch.

    • 12

Finish off, leaving a 4-inch tail. Weave the tail into the nearby stitches with a yarn needle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Change the size of the hat by increasing or decreasing the number of stitches per round.

  • Make a cuff around the bottom of the beanie by single crocheting another 10 rows during Step 9 and omitting Step 10. Turn up the bottom edge of the beanie onto itself to make the cuff.
