How to Make Clothing Collars in Second Life
The fully customizable game "Second Life" enables residents to create clothing via the Appearance function. Clothes require the use of templates that provide contour and seam lines, which help direct you when creating clothing layers for your avatar. If you want to create a personalized collar with your own design and color, then you need a digital design program to edit the graphics. Before any texture uploads into "Second Life," the creation begins in these programs, where you personalize every part of your avatar's clothing.

Creating the Collar
-
1
Download the official Linden body and clothing templates from the "Clothing Tutorial" page on the "Second Life" official wiki. The download link is the first under "General." These templates download as a PSD file.
-
2
Open the PSD template named "Upper_body_template_Ver_1_1.psd" in a graphic design program, such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP or Corel PaintShop Photo Pro. The templates are layers for parts of the avatar body.
-
-
3
Look in the layers tab of your graphics editing program to find the layer titled "working layer." Select this layer to work on. The template maps out the seam edges and curves of the avatar for you. You see "Front," "Back," "Outer Arms" and "Inner Arms."
-
4
Use the paintbrush tool and pick a color to draw the collar. Keep a photo open in another window of a collar for inspiration as you design your own.
-
5
Hover your paint brush tool over the second line underneath the top of the neck on the "Front" section of the template. Map out a structure for the collar on the avatar's body. Choose a high collar, V-neck, Victorian, Oxford or other style that suits your avatar.
-
6
Paint the outline of the collar following the curve of the chest and torso. Fill in with the base color up to the top of the neck line. Repeat for the "Back" as needed. If your collar curves up to the back of the neck, draw only a small, curved line at the top of the torso or back.
-
7
Use the erase tool to adjust the shape and smooth out any jagged edges. Erase the lines near the seams, the multicolored outline that surrounds each part of the template. This rainbow line marks the seam pattern. In "Second Life," the seam is where the parts of the avatar meet together, creating a defining line if clothes are not drawn correctly.
-
8
Finish the collar by adding in different colors or additional details. Click "File" and "Save As" and type in "Collar." Click "OK."
Uploading the Texture
-
9
Open "Second Life" and log in with your username and password.
-
10
Click "File" and "Upload" and double-click on your "Collar" texture. Your texture loads into "Second Life." Click "Upload" to complete the upload. Every texture upload costs 10 Lindens.
-
11
Click "Edit" and then "Appearance." Click on "Jacket," "Shirt" or "Undershirt" from the clothing section of the appearance tab. Click "Create New Jacket" to begin a new clothing layer.
-
12
