How to Transcribe From Viola to Bass Clef
A viola is a musical instrument that is in the strings family of instruments. It resembles a violin, but it is slightly larger. Most music that is written for the viola is written in what is known as the alto clef. This is an alternative clef that is used for various types of instruments. The standard musical clefs are the treble and bass clefs. You can transcribe music from the alto clef for viola to the bass clef by following a specific pattern of note movement.

1
Interpret each note of the music written for viola in the alto clef. A note that lies on the center line is middle C. The next space up is D. The line that is second from the top is E. The top space is F, and the top line is G. The space under the middle line is B. The second line from the bottom is A. The first space is G and the first line is F. A note that lies just below the first line is E, and a note below E with a small ledger line running through it is D.

2
Write in the name of each note on the original piece of music if you need to as you interpret it.

3
Write notes on the bass clef six increments higher than they appear on the alto clef. Use a blank sheet of staff paper to do this. Count each line or space as one increment. For instance, if you have an F below middle C on the alto clef, count up six increments and write the new note on the second line from the top of the bass clef. Do this for each note of the song.
