How to Crochet a Christmas Blanket

How to Crochet a Christmas Blanket thumbnail
Red, green and white yarn create Christmas-themed crocheted blankets.

Crochet a Christmas blanket for a homemade gift or a warm and decorative addition to your holiday decor. Christmas blankets come in all sizes, shapes and varieties, but using red, green and white yarn is a surefire way to bring the season into the blanket's design. Select a yarn that is soft to the touch but is also machine washable and dryable for convenience, such as acrylic or acrylic blends. Always read the care instructions on the yarn's label before purchasing yarn.

Instructions

    • 1

Make 155 chain stitches with the red yarn. Chain stitches are made by placing a slip knot on the crochet hook, wrapping the yarn around the hook and drawing the hook with the new loop of yarn through the slip knot.

    • 2

Turn the chain so that the last stitch made is not facing as the next stitch to work.

    • 3

Make a half double crochet stitch in the third chain from the hook. Wrap the yarn around the hook's tip and slide the hook through the third chain from the hook, moving from front to back through the chain. Wrap the yarn around the hook again, and pull the hook through the chain stitch, drawing a new loop onto the hook. Wrap the yarn around the hook once more, and pull the hook through all three loops on the hook. This is one half double crochet stitch.

    • 4

Make one half double crochet stitch in each of the remaining chain stitches.

    • 5

Turn the work so that the last stitch worked is now the first stitch facing. Make two chain stitches, skip one half double crochet stitch, and make one half double crochet stitch in each of the half double crochet stitches across the row.

    • 6

Continue to half double crochet across each row, switching colors every three rows. To switch colors, join the new color in the last double crochet stitch of the row. Half double crochet as normal until you have three loops on the hook. Wrap the new color of yarn around the hook once and draw the new color through all three loops on the hook. Continue with the new strand of yarn. Clip the old color of yarn, leaving a 5-inch tail to weave in later.

    • 7

Continue working half double crochet rows until the work reaches 31 inches from the beginning. Make single crochet stitches around the blanket's perimeter. To do so, make 154 single crochet stitches evenly spaced around the blanket. To single crochet, insert the hook through the work, wrap the yarn around and draw up a new loop. Wrap the yarn around the hook once more, and pull the hook through both loops on the hook.

Make three single crochet stitches in the same space at each corner before proceeding down the next side of the blanket.

    • 8

Join the last single crochet stitch made to the first single crochet stitch with a slip stitch. To make a slip stitch, insert the hook through the first single crochet stitch made, wrap the yarn around the hook and pull the hook through both stitches on the hook.

    • 9

Finish the blanket by fastening off and sewing in the loose ends. To fasten off, cut the yarn, leaving roughly a 6-inch tail. Wrap the tail around the hook, and pull it through the last loop on the hook.

To sew in loose ends, thread the loose end through the yarn needle and sew a few small stitches along the edge of the work. Cut any excess yarn.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using a different size crochet hook or yarn weight will alter the size of the blanket and the amount of yarn needed to complete this project.
