How to Make a Phone Voice Changer

A telephone has a microphone in the handset that transmits your voice in electrical impulses that are carried by the telephone line and then decoded back to voice on another phone. You can disguise your voice, making it sound like a character from Stars Wars, for instance, by making an amplified phone voice changer from parts acquired from a toy store and from an electronics store. You position the phone voice changer between your mouth and the phone, and it alters the characteristics of your voice before the microphone picks it up.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place a battery-powered MP3 player docking station next to the telephone. Insert one end of a mini-jack cable into the mini-jack input on the docking station. Place a voice modulating speaker toy on the table with the speaker grill facing up. Grip the sides of the grill and pull it off the toy's case.

    • 2

Remove the screws from around the speaker diaphragm that is inside the grill, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the speaker diaphragm off the grill. Place the grill aside.

    • 3

Apply bonding glue to the bottom of the speaker diaphragm. Place the bottom of the speaker diaphragm against the center post on the case. Press down on the speaker diaphragm to adhere it to the post. Let the glue set for the amount of time specified in its instructions before continuing.

    • 4

Place the docking station flat on the table, with the speakers that are on it facing up. Connect the free end of the mini-jack cable into the mini-jack output on the voice modulating toy. Turn the toy over. Open the battery compartment lid, Insert fresh batteries into the battery compartment and close the lid. Turn the toy over.

    • 5

Dial a phone number of a friend on the telephone or cell phone. Place the speaking section of the handset, if using a landline telephone, against one of the docking station's speakers; if using a cell phone, place the section of the cell phone where the microphone is located against the speaker.

    • 6

Speak into the mic that is attached to your voice changer when your friend picks up the phone. Ask your fried to try to figure out who you are supposed to sound like, and who you really are, now that you have changed your voice.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use a portable, battery-powered speaker instead of the docking station, providing that it has a mini-jack input.

  • Do not use the phone voice changer to call people you are not friends with as it could be considered offensive and get you into trouble.
