How to Make Lava for a Volcano

Create your own simple lava for your homemade volcano.

When you think of a volcano, you probably imagine a sudden burst of red hot lava erupting at any moment. Turn this thought into a reality, with this simple recipe that uses ingredients that you already have in your kitchen. Try this lava recipe in your own homemade volcano or in a styrofoam cup. Whichever you choose, make sure to stand back-- the lava could erupt at any time.

Things You'll Need

• Red food coloring
• Vinegar
• Baking Soda
• Dishwashing liquid
• Funnel
• Plastic beverage bottle

Instructions

1. Place the funnel in the mouth of the bottle. Pour in baking soda until it is about 1/4 full. Pour in a few tablespoons of dishwashing liquid.

2. Mix 1/4 cup vinegar and several drops of red and orange food coloring in a separate container.

3. Pour the vinegar mixture into the funnel. Stand back and await the eruption.

Tips & Warnings

• To make a simple volcano, apply clay, in a mountain shape, around the outside of the container. Let it dry and then practice your explosion.
