How to Modify a Dash Bezel

How to Modify a Dash Bezel thumbnail
You can customize your car's interior by painting the dash bezels.

Dash bezels are the large plastic pieces that make up your car's dashboard and center console. Usually made of plastic, these can be modified to suit your tastes by changing the finish, color or texture. This can be done by using specialized plastic paints or purchasing bezel laminate kits. Some modifications require removal of the bezel pieces, while laminate kits are simply placed on top of the bezel and do not require removal.

Instructions

  1. Laminated Bezels

    • 1

Clean the bezel with alcohol wipe if you are going to apply a bezel laminate. Laminates are coverings that are pre-cut for your specific vehicle and placed over the bezel. Pre-cut laminates come in a wide variety of colors and finishes such as metallic, wood or carbon fiber.

    • 2

Use a hairdryer or heat gun to heat up the plastic bezel. It should be very warm to the touch, but not extremely hot. Heating the plastic of the bezel will promote bonding between the bezel and the laminate.

    • 3

Remove the adhesive backing on the laminate and then press it to the bezel firmly for a minute to ensure the laminate bonds. Laminates are thick sections that will not bubble. The only concern is the adhesive won't adhere, which occurs when the underlying plastic is not properly prepped, cleaned and heated.

Remove the bezels from the car and set them in a dust-free area. Use a soft pry tool to remove the plastic bezel to ensure you do not scratch it. Gently insert the pry tool behind the bezel and gently pull away. When you feel tension from the clips, slide the pry tool near the clips, making sure to use the least amount of force necessary. Bezels are typically held in place with clips that are on the outer edges of the bezel, but on the inside of the panels (not visible when installed).

    • 5

Use very fine 400-grit sandpaper to slightly rough the surface of the bezel to help the paint bond. Wipe down with an alcohol wipe to remove any sanding dust.

    • 6

Using several light coats, spray the bezel in a well-ventilated area, using even left-to-right strokes. Allow the paint to dry 20 minutes between coats. Be sure to spray the backside of the bezel as well as the front so that the bezel looks uniform from any angle.

    • 7

Reattach the bezel into the factory location by firmly pushing the side clips into the dash until you hear them click. Be sure to allow the bezel at least 2 hours to thoroughly dry before re-installation.
