How to Prevent My Child From Shoplifting Again

Talk to your child about her shoplifting.

Finding out that your child has been shoplifting can be devastating. While older children may steal because of peer pressure, younger children may not know that stealing is wrong. Some children may steal because they can't afford something they want or because they want attention. Whether your child is stealing candy or electronics, you must correct his behavior immediately before it gets out of control.

Instructions

    • 1

Confront your child. Make him aware that you know he is stealing. If your child is younger, tell him that it is wrong to take something without paying for it. If you know your child understands that stealing is wrong, let him know that you are disappointed with his actions. Tell him that stealing hurts others and can lead to serious consequences, such as spending time in jail.

    • 2

Require your child to return the merchandise to the store she stole it from. She should apologize to the store owner or security department for what she has done. If this is her first offense, she will likely be let go with a warning. According to KidsHealth.org, the embarrassment of owning up to her actions can be a deterrent to not do it again.

    • 3

Refrain from physically punishing your child. Using physical force will not teach him that stealing is wrong, and might cause him to become angry and continue his behavior.

    • 4

Talk to a therapist if your child continues to steal. A licensed professional can help you determine the real cause of the behavior. Your child may have kleptomania, which is the "irresistible urge to steal items that you don't really need and that usually have little value," according to the Mayo Clinic. When you confront your child, let her know that you are concerned about her shoplifting and that you want her to talk to a professional.
