Excel Tutorials: Toolbar

Microsoft Excel is a popular data processing program. One of its features is the customizable Quick Access Toolbar. The toolbar can be modified to your specifications, so that your most commonly used commands in the program are readily available to you with a mere click of your mouse. Move the toolbar to a desired location at the top or bottom of the screen. Customize your toolbar by adding mathematical formula Quick Access button commands and use them to insert data into your spreadsheets.

      Run Excel. Select the "File" tab located at the top left of the screen to open the "File Menu." Select "Options." The Excel Options dialog box will appear on the screen. Select "Quick Access Toolbar." The Customize the Quick Access Toolbar dialog box will appear on the screen with the "Choose Commands From:" drop-down list on the right and the Customize Quick Access Toolbar drop-down list on the left.

      Add items listed under "Choose Commands From:" to your toolbar. Click on the arrow beneath "Choose commands From:" to make a drop-down menu appear. Select where you want to "Choose Commands From:" by clicking on a listed location.

      Go to the drop-down list located just below the "Choose Commands From:" and scroll through the list to find the command that you want to put on your toolbar. Click on the command. Click "Add" to add it to the "Customize Quick Access Toolbar:" list on the right of the dialog box. Click "OK" when you are done. The command items you added will now be on your toolbar.

      Change the toolbar location. Click "Customize Quick Access Toolbar." Select either "Show Below the Ribbon" or "Show Above the Ribbon" to change its location at the top of the screen.
