Framed doilies can become heirlooms to be passed down for generations.

Once you've finished an intricate piece of crochet art, it's time to think about how to display it. Framing it under glass keeps the work dust free and helps preserve it for future generations. Beautiful and lacy crochet work, such as doilies, can be mounted on a backing of fabric-covered foam core before framing. Add a coordinated acid-free mat to further highlight the work and add a professional look.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the foam core board. Measure the foam core board with the tape measure and mark with the pencil so that it's larger by at least several inches than the crochet art. Cut it out using the razor knife and straight edge.

    • 2

Attach the crochet art to the fabric. Wash, dry and press the fabric. Cut the fabric with scissors so that it overlaps the piece of foam core board by about 3 inches. Stretch the fabric out on a flat surface. Lay the crochet work on top and pin it in place with straight pins. Use the sewing needle and thread to tack the work down to the fabric at multiple points, depending upon the shape of the artwork. Flip the fabric over so that the back is facing you and straighten it so that there aren't any wrinkles.

Attach the fabric to the foam core board. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to spray the foam core board with the adhesive. Carefully position the board over the back of the artwork and gently press it in place. Let it dry. Wrap the fabric edges over the back of the board and fold the corners like wrapping a present. Tape the edges in place.

Flip the artwork over and add any desired matting. Highly textured artwork, such as free-form crochet, may need additional matting and a deep frame to accommodate the additional depth of the work. Frame the work under glass.
