Instructions

    • 1

Protect your area against condensation by using a paint-on waterproofing. Clean the surface of your area completely before applying the waterproofing, as dust, dirt and other debris can impede the bond of the waterproofing agent to the surface of the installation area. Apply paint to the inside corners with a paint brush, and use a paint roller to cover the larger areas. Allow to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions and apply a second coat only if required.

Use a waterproofing membrane as an alternative to paint-on waterproofing. Prep the area by completely cleaning the surface. Paint or roll on a coat of the primer supplied by the manufacturer of the waterproofing membrane and allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Peel away the protective cover of the membrane to expose the adhesive on the back and install it in your chosen area.

Install an exterior waterproofing product on the walls of your basement in conjunction with a drainage system to avoid buildup of condensation over time. Apply a coat of liquid rubber to the foundation wall, then install an air-gap membrane before adding weeping tile. Cover it with gravel and install a filter fabric over the gravel. Have your local building inspector conduct an inspection to ensure you have installed everything correctly.

Tips & Warnings

  • While the interior methods of waterproofing are simple enough that any do-it-yourselfer can accomplish them, the exterior method requires working knowledge of construction methods and access to tools, as well as the knowledge of how to use them.

  • Always wear protective gear when working with chemicals.
