Japanese velvet powder creates a grass-like texture.

Artists use Japanese velvet powder to create a textured surface on paintings and artificial flowers. Velvet powder is a form of flocking, which are thousands of tiny fibers used to give texture to surfaces. The powder comes in a variety of colors and gives painted areas texture, to simulate grass, snow, flowers and trees. An ounce of velvet powder will cover approximately 3 square feet, depending on how thickly it is applied.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down old newspapers or plastic to protect the work area.

    • 2

Place the painting flat on the newspapers or plastic.

    • 3

Apply a layer of glue to the area where the velvet powder will go. Use a glue pad, which is similar to an ink pad, or apply with a brush. To prevent the glue from accidentally going into other areas, mask them off with masking tape.

    • 4

Pour the Japanese velvet powder onto the glued areas until completely covered. Press down with your fingers or the back of a spoon.

    • 5

Let dry for a couple of hours. Gently shake off any excess powder.
