How to Draw an Axe Guitar

Among guitar players, the guitar is often referred to as an axe. Some guitarists have had custom guitars built to resemble an axe, such as the axe bass guitar Gene Simmons of Kiss often plays. Drawing an axe guitar isn't difficult. The elements of an axe guitar resemble other guitars, with the exception of the axe-shaped body.

Draw the neck of the guitar. Draw two horizontal lines running parallel to one another. Draw vertical lines along the neck of the guitar to create frets. The frets should number between 26 and 32. The exact number doesn't matter. Regardless of the size you want to draw your guitar, the neck should be about two and a half times the size of the body of the guitar. At one end of the two horizontal lines, draw a headstock. The headstock can be any shape you want it to be, but it has to be connected to the two horizontal lines, which represent the neck of the guitar. Draw six circles on (three on each side of the head stock) for the tuning keys.

At the bottom of the neck, opposite the headstock, draw the body of the guitar shaped like an axe. This should be about two and a half times shorter than the neck. Draw a straight horizontal line for the top of the body (start the line about the same distance above the body as the neck of the guitar is), then draw two vertical lines extending from the top body line of the guitar. Curve the outer line toward the left edge of your paper (your left) and the inner line (closest to the neck) toward the right edge of the paper. Attach these lines with a horizontal line that curves slightly toward the bottom edge of your paper, creating the sharp edge of the axe shape.

Draw the details of your guitar. Draw two or three circles on the blade part of your axe for tone and volume controls. The controls can go anywhere but typically are placed near the end of the guitar's body at the lower edge. Draw a wavy line across the top of the blade to add some texture to the body of the guitar.

Draw a small rectangle for the bridge at the beginning of the body centered on the opposite edge from where the neck and body joined. Draw two more rectangles for pickups, then draw six lines extending from this bridge to the tuning keys on the headstock.

Shade your axe and add smudges to give the impression of a metallic surface. Do the smudges and blending with your fingertip and a lead pencil. Add a thin line of shading around the body to thicken it, then color the bridge, pickups and control knobs darker so they stand out in contrast to the body. Add some color to the strings to thicken them as well.
