How to Make a Sew-On Applique
A sew-on applique is made from one or more pieces of fabric attached together to create a completed object, shape or design. A time-consuming way of creating a sew-on applique is to hand-stitch the different pieces of fabric together to create its shape or form. A fusible bonding web fabric is on the market that saves time when making a sew-on applique. The fusible bonding web fabric is like an interfacing with two sticky sides. Any size sew-on applique is possible using fusible bonding web. The process is the same for all sizes.

1
Determine the shape of the sew-on applique. Draw and cut out a paper pattern of the desired shape or shapes. For example, draw a Christmas star, Christmas tree and Christmas tree ornaments.
-
2
Cut a piece of fusible bonding web one half-inch larger than the paper pattern applique. For example, a Christmas star measures two inches square. Cut a piece of fusible bonded web that is 2 1/2 inches square.
-
-
3
Cut as many pieces of fusible bonding web as required for the sew-on applique. For example, the typical Christmas star has two layers: a large layer that is yellow and a second star that is one-inch-square and made from a gold fabric. Cut a piece of fusible bonded web 1 1/2 inches for the second star.
-
4
Turn on the iron set to a cotton setting.
-
5
Cover the ironing board with a piece of brown paper wrapping.
-
6
Select a piece or pieces of fabric to make the sew-on applique. Turn the fabric over so the front side or the pattern side is on the bottom. Place the fabric on the brown wrapping paper. For example, a yellow star is often used for a Christmas star sew-on applique.
-
7
Place the cut pieces of fusible bonding web on the desired fabric colors with the paper side up. This will prevent the fusible bonding web from sticking to the iron.
-
8
Place the iron on top of the fusible bonding web paper. Hold the iron in place for 15 seconds. Remove the hot iron.
-
9
Position the sew-on applique pattern in the center of the fusible bonding web on the desired fabric color. Trace around the paper pattern. Cut out each sew-on applique shape.
-
10
Remove the paper from the back of the cut out applique. Turn the applique over so the fabric is on top. Position the applique in the desired location. Place the iron on top of the applique for 15 seconds. Remove the iron and add sew into place. Attach the sew-on applique pieces in layers. Begin with the back layer and work up. For example, the two-layer star begins with the large star on the bottom. Position the second star on top. Make sure to remove the paper on the fusible bonding web on both layers. Place the iron over the applique pieces for 15 seconds.
