How to Recover Dogmeat in "Fallout 3"

"Fallout 3" is a post-apocalyptic role-playing game. Over the course of the game, players attract a team of followers to help in the adventure. One of the first companions that the player can get is the canine, Dogmeat. Dogmeat serves the dual purpose of attacking enemies and sniffing out hidden items. In two instances, the player might need to "recover" Dogmeat. If he sends Dogmeat back to Vault 101, he can fetch him at any time by using the quick travel menu. Additionally, if Dogmeat dies, the player can recover one of Dogmeat's puppies from the vault as long as he has the "Puppies!" perk.

Instructions

  1. Retrieving Dogmeat

    • 1

Click on Dogmeat to interact with him. Select the "Return to Vault 101" command. Dogmeat will leave the party and wait at Vault 101 until you retrieve him.

    • 2

      Click on the map icon.

    • 3

Select Vault 101 as your destination and then push "Quick Travel."

    • 4

Speak with Dogmeat to bring him back into your party.

    Retrieve a Puppy

    • 5

Select the "Puppies!" perk when you reach experience level 22.

    • 6

Keep Dogmeat in your active party. If he dies, a puppy is born at Vault 101.

    • 7

Push the map button and select Vault 101. Push "Quick Travel."

    • 8

Click on Dogmeat's puppy to bring him into your party. If this puppy dies, yet another will appear in Vault 101, ensuring that you never run out of dog companions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Since Dogmeat can't wear armor, he's your most vulnerable companion. This means that if you want him to live to the end of the game, you'll have to either fight defensively to keep him safe or send him back to Vault 101, where he's out of harm's way. The "Puppies!" perk is an effective compromise, though you'll have to sacrifice one of your perk points to get it.
