A cloche is a hat with a small brim on it, close-fitting to the head and hanging down slightly over the eyes. Popular in the era of flappers, this vintage style has made a comeback with an all-new fan base. Crochet your own cloche hat using your favorite yarn in a variety of soft, pastel colors to highlight this feminine style. Increase the width of the hat. For round two, chain one and make two half double crochets in every stitch around; join with a slip stitch. Crochet the sides of the cloche. To do this, chain one and make one half double crochet stitch in every stitch around. Repeat this step until the cloche is large enough to come down just above your ears, or approximately seven inches tall.

    • 4

Finish off the hat. Cut your working yarn with scissors, leaving a 4-inch tail. Make one final slip stitch on the brim of the hat and pull this tail all the way through the stitch, pulling gently to secure it. Thread this tail onto an embroidery needle and weave in the end of the yarn on the inside of the hat where no one will see it. Repeat this with any remaining yarn tails and the hat is ready to wear.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make the hat wider, add another increase round. To make it narrower, take away an increase round.
