Subcontractors perform specific tasks under the supervision of a general contractor who is responsible for overseeing large, complex building projects that require many different trades. It is often easier for someone with experience or education in a specific trade to obtain a subcontractors license. In Maryland, subcontractors gain licensure through the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation's, or DLLR, Home Improvement Commission. To become a subcontractor in Maryland you must first meet all of the eligibility requirements set forth by the state and complete the licensing process.
Register with PSI Examinations for the Subcontractor Examination. During the registration process you will specify that you are seeking licensure in Maryland as a subcontractor and must provide proof of at least 2 years of "trade" experience or education related to a building trade. Additionally, you must pass the exam with a score of 70 percent or better to be eligible for licensure.
Obtain an application for licensure as a subcontractor from the Maryland DLLR Home Improvement Commission. If you will be operating under a trade name, you must check with the Commission to ensure the name is available and register your trade name with the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation prior to applying for licensure.
Purchase liability insurance of at least $50,000 as a subcontractor. You must be able to prove that you carry this insurance at the time you submit your application for licensure.
Submit the completed application to the Home Improvement Commission, along with proof of your experience and education in a building trade and financial solvency, and have at least $50,000 of liability insurance. At the time of publication, you must also pay the $125 licensing fee. Upon approval of your application, you will receive notification within six to eight weeks and issued a subcontractor license.
