How to Whittle Arrowheads
For centuries, archers have used bows and arrows for sport, as a hobby or for survival. Archers who enjoy creating their own tools can whittle an arrowhead for homemade arrows. The process of whittling an arrowhead involves potentially dangerous materials and, if children get involved in the process, they require careful supervision by adults who are somewhat familiar with the materials or the procedure.

1
Choose your wood. If purchasing it, use smooth wood such as cedar or a softer wood such as basswood. Make your arrowhead from a piece wood that is 5-by-5 inches.
-
2
Draw the outline for your arrowhead on the block of wood. Make a traditional arrowhead shape by sketching a triangle into the face of the block, with roughly horizontal notches for the base of the triangle.

3
Position the carving knife in your dominant hand and the block of wood in the other hand. Push the carving knife away from your body, and whittle away the wood outside of your arrowhead outline.
-
4
Smooth the arrowhead with sandpaper and place it over the smoldering coals of your fire so that it hardens. Paint the arrowhead if desired.
