How to Create Social Bookmark Links
Social bookmarking links eliminate needless searches when you want to show someone a website but don't have access to your computer or the bookmarks saved on it. Linking sites you like with your social bookmarking account lets you access your bookmarks whenever you have an Internet connection and a computer, or you can share them with friends or the public. The bookmarking sites are free; some do offer a paid premium option. Social bookmark links are also used as a search-engine optimization (SEO) strategy. You can create bookmark links and icons from your site to the individual social bookmark sites. When a visitor to your site clicks on an icon, your site will be saved to that person's social bookmark account. This creates a backlink from the social bookmark site to your website. This may generate more traffic to your site and gets it ranked higher in search engine results. The more sites you have linking in to your website, the better your search engine rank will be. You can add the required code to your site fairly easily using one of the two methods described.

Navigate to Diigo.com. Click on the "Join Diigo" or "Sign In" text link in the upper left-hand side of the screen.

Add the Diigo toolbar to your computer by downloading it from the "Tools" link at the top of the screen. Restart your browser. To bookmark a site using the toolbar, click on the "Bookmark" text or icon. If you are not signed in to the site, you will be prompted to do so before saving.

If you do not want to add another toolbar to your computer, you can download the "Diigolet" plug-in to your Firefox browser. Click on the "Diigolet" text link in the right sidebar. Drag and drop the "Diigolet" button into the menu bar of your browser.

Click on the "Diigo Extensions for Chrome" text link in the right sidebar if you use the Chrome browser. Click on the large button in the center of the page that says "Get it in the Chrome extension gallery NOW!" Follow the directions at the extension gallery.

Navigate to the Delicious.com website. Join or sign in using the text links in the upper right-hand side of the screen. You can also sign in with your Yahoo ID. You will be taken to your bookmark library page.

Save a new bookmark by clicking on the "Save a New Bookmark" text link in the upper right-hand side of the page. Enter the URL in the pop-up that appears. Click "Next."

Fill in the title of the website you are bookmarking and any tags you want associated with it. You can also make notes about the site. Tick the box next to "Make Private" if you do not want this bookmark shared with visitors to Del.icio.us.

Scroll down to the bottom of any screen. In the footer, click on the "Tools" text link. In the first section on the page, "Browser Buttons for Saving Bookmarks," click on the text link for your browser. Install the add-on or plug-in to your browser. To save bookmarks to your Del.icio.us account, click the button in your toolbar once it is installed. You may need to restart your browser before the button is visible.

Navigate to the Social-Bookmark-Script.com website. Select the social bookmarking websites you want to link from your site. Select the type of icons you would like. Click on the doctype you want the code written in. Read the "Terms and Conditions" and tick the box. Click "Generate Script."

Click on the "Mark Script" button on the screen that appears after you have generated the script. This will highlight the script in the textbox. You can copy and paste the script into the html code on your website.

Navigate to the AddtoBookmarks.com website. Click on "Download AddToBookmarks Script Here" to download the zipped script to your computer. Click on the zipped file and unzip. Use an FTP client to upload the script to your website control panel. Copy and paste the following code types to the specified area. The CSS code goes in the <head> area of the code page. The first JavaScript code in the unzipped file goes at the top of the <body> section of the code page. The second JavaScript code listed in the unzipped file goes in the section of code where you want it to appear on your site.

Look at the second JavaScript code that you have pasted at the top of the <body> section of code. Find the piece of code that reads "var AddtoLayout=" and change the number that follows the equal sign to either a 0, 1, 2 or 3, depending on the layout style you want. A "0" indicates a horizontal one-row layout. A "1" indicates a horizontal two-row layout. A "2" indicates a vertical one-column layout and a "3" indicates a vertical two-column layout.

Look at the second JavaScript code that you have pasted at the top of the <body> section of code. Locate the piece of code that reads "var AddtoMethod=" and change the number just after the equal sign to either a "0" or a "1." A "0" indicates that when you click the link to the social bookmarking site you want it to open in the current web page. A "1" indicates that when you click the link to the social bookmarking site, you want it to open in a pop-up box. Save your changes.
