How to Make a Wonder Woman Costume for a Child

How to Make a Wonder Woman Costume for a Child thumbnail
Help your daughter be Wonder Woman by making her next Halloween costume.

Wonder Woman first made her debut in 1941 in DC Comics. In 1975, Lynda Carter made her famous in the television show "The New Adventures of Wonder Woman." Since then multiple animated series and comic books have portrayed the Amazon superhero. If you want to dress your little one up as Wonder Woman for this Halloween, make your own costume with little effort. The finished product uses things you find around your house, local thrift store or the craft store and requires minimal sewing abilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach 10 1/2-inch white stars to a navy blue bikini bottom. If you cannot find navy blue, use a white one, and dye it with fabric dyes. Use applique stars from the craft store, and attach them using fabric glue. Allow the glue to dry overnight.

    • 2

Draw the outline of an eagle with outstretched wings on a piece of metallic gold fabric using a fabric pen. Make the eagle 5 inches tall and 6 inches wide. If you are not comfortable drawing the eagle freehand, locate an image of an eagle online and use it as a template. Cut out the eagle shape using fabric scissors.

    • 3

Attach the eagle to the front of a red sleeveless leotard using fabric glue. Allow the glue to dry completely.

    • 4

Cut two pieces of metallic silver fabric to create the arm guards. Cut the fabric 1 inch shorter than the length of your child's arm from wrist to elbow and 1-inch wider than the diameter. Roll the pieces of fabric lengthwise into tubes. Use straight pins to attach the rolled edges together, creating a 3/4-inch seam. Sew along the seam using a sewing machine, and then remove the straight pins.

    • 5

Cut a piece of metallic gold fabric that is 1 inch longer than your child's waist measurement and 2 inches wide. Fold the long edges over 1/4 inch, and secure them with straight pins. Sew along the edges to secure them. Remove the straight pins. Attach a piece of 1 1/2-inch Velcro to the ends of the gold strip, and sew it in place.

    • 6

Use spray fabric paint to color a plain 2-inch-wide stretch headband metallic gold. Allow the paint to dry overnight before hot gluing a 1-inch red applique star to the front center of the band.

    • 7

Dress your child in the costume components. Add a store-bought red cape and a pair of red shoes. If possible, use red knee-high boots.

Tips & Warnings

  • If desired, use a long black wig to complete the look.

  • To avoid injury, do not touch the hot glue or the metal tip of the gun directly.
