How to Make Homemade Satin Blankets for Babies thumbnail
A homemade satin blanket makes a great baby shower gift.

Babies love the smooth and silky texture of satin against their skin. If you have been invited to a baby shower, a homemade satin blanket is a thoughtful gift for the mother-to-be. Look for washable satin at fabric stores. Before sewing the blanket, wash the fabric in a detergent specially formulated for baby clothing. The finished blanket features a layer of soft cotton quilt batting sandwiched between two layers of satin to create a luxurious blanket just right for a newborn.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the silk fabric in a detergent formulated for baby clothes. Dry the fabric in a clothes dryer.

    • 2

Measure and cut two pieces of fabric, each 36 inches square.

Measure and cut one piece of cotton quilt batting 36 inches square.

    • 3

Place one piece of satin right side down on a flat surface, such as a table. Cover the satin with the quilt batting. Cover the quilt batting with the second piece of satin, right side up.

    • 4

Cut several 2-inch-wide strips of satin fabric to measure 12 feet long when pieced together. Sew strips together with a 1/4-inch straight seam. This forms the blanket binding.

    • 5

Pin the blanket binding to one edge of the blanket layers with the straight pins. Insert safety pins along the remaining edges of the blanket layers to hold the layers together.

    • 6

Sew a straight stitch 1/4 inch from the edge of the fabric through the binding and all the blanket layers. Use a sewing machine or needle and thread.

    • 7

Fold the binding at a right angle at the blanket corner. Remove the safety pins from the second edge. Attach the binding to the blanket edge with the straight pins. Sew as in Step 5. Repeat these steps to attach binding to remaining edges.

    • 8

Fold the binding over 1/2 inch, then fold over another 1/2 inch. Hand-stitch the banding to the back of the completed satin baby blanket.
